Here are examples of restored woodgrain steering wheels used on Mopar 1968 to 1970 Charger,
GTX, Roadrunner, Dart, Barracuda and other cars. Again, we show the restored steering wheels
and examples of the type of defects these steering wheels often have.
This picture shows a steering wheel,
which has no wood grain left on the rim,
due to wear and age. It also has small
cracks in the finger grip side.
Here is the same steering wheel after
complete restoration of the plastic rim.
The cracks on the finger grip side have
been repaired, the wood grain cut into
the surface and the restoration finished
with stains and the clear top coat.
Notice how the wood grain effect shows
up.
This picture shows one of the typical
cracks that are in the finger grip side
of these steering wheels. These type
of cracks are first repaired with a high
strength epoxy, then filled with a
catalyzed color matching filler, before
the stains and finishes are applied.
This picture shows the same steering
wheel after the repair of the crack.
Notice how the repair does not show.
Often the spokes on these wheels
become corroded and pitted over
time. This picture shows a
typical spoke.
This picture shows a refinished
spoke. As shown, the pitting is
no longer visible and the spokes
have a nice satin silver
appearance that is very close to
the original satin chrome finish.
These two pictures show a
complete split in the steering
wheel rim and the restored rim.
These type of cracks are first
repaired with a high strength
epoxy, then final filled with a
catalyzed color matching filler,
before the complete rim is sanded.
These pictures show the various
color vinyl dyes I have available
to use when restoring the horn
buttons or wheel centers. I can
also redye customer's horn
buttons if needed.
These pictures show another service I
offer. which is covering steering
wheels with a hand stitched leather
cover. While all the covers shown are
black, I can supply covers in other
colors. The spokes have been restored
on two of the wheels.
